This makes it an ideal time to correct bite issues and align teeth effectively. Starting orthodontic care during this stage can:

Important note: Not every teenager requires braces or aligners. In some cases, careful monitoring is all that is needed. Your orthodontist will discuss the right approach for your child.

5. Retention
Once treatment is complete, retainers are fitted to maintain the results long-term.

How long will my teen need braces?
Most treatments take 12 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of the case and how well instructions are followed. We’ll give you a personalised timeline at your consultation.
Do braces hurt?
There may be some mild discomfort after fitting or adjustments — kind of like sore muscles after a workout. It usually settles within a few days, and over-the-counter pain relief helps.
What’s the difference between metal and clear braces?
They both work effectively, but clear braces are less noticeable and often preferred by teens who want a more discreet option. Metal braces are durable and often more cost-effective.
Can my teen still play sport or musical instruments?
Absolutely! Many of our patients play footy, netball, or instruments like trumpet or clarinet. We provide mouthguards for contact sports and offer tips for adapting to musical instruments.
What if they break a bracket or lose an aligner?
Just give us a call. We’ll schedule a quick repair or replace the aligner. Emergencies like this are rare and easy to fix.
Will they need to miss school?
Not at all. Appointments are quick and usually scheduled outside of school hours when possible. If a visit falls during school, it’s typically a short time away.
Are payment plans available?
Yes. We offer interest-free payment plans and work with all major health funds. We’ll walk you through the costs and rebates during your consultation.
When should my teen start treatment?
Most teens begin between 11 and 15 years old, once their adult teeth have come through. If they’ve had early treatment as a child, this phase will fine-tune the final result.
Will they need to wear a retainer after treatment?
Yes, retainers help keep their smile in place long-term. They’re easy to wear, often just at night, and we’ll guide you through how to care for them.
